I’m very sad to see the developments at NSCAD University as it struggles to resolve its financial woes. Mathew Reichertz, a faculty member and Chair of Fine Arts discusses the adversity and cutbacks the school has had to face in recent months here. Programs, activities, facilities and professors have taken enormous hits in what can only be described as a slaughter upon the school’s integrity as an arts institution.

In 1994, as an awkward kid entering the 7th grade, I was eagerly anticipating the chance to nurture my talents and move toward art, in whatever way possible. But Hebbville Junior High School was in the process of making cutbacks, and the arts were the first to go. They always are. Good art asks questions, explores culture from within, angers, entertains, moves, informs, and holds a mirror up to society and asks it to take a good, close look. It embraces all subject matter, and that includes economic growth, sustainability, and all the vitality and substance that the future holds. Yet by some, it is considered inconsequential, or heaven forbid, economically unviable. I’m quite proud to say I am a hard-working, tax paying painter sustaining myself entirely from artistic income, a feat I couldn’t have accomplished had I not gone to NSCAD. Art is my love and my livelihood, and the school opened a gateway for me to share that with the larger community of Halifax, Nova Scotia and beyond. The prospect that it’s future students will not share that joy is a shame. But the arts are always the first to go, and frankly, it’s insulting. It has been that way for a very long time, but that doesn’t make it right, and as we see a world degrading around us, perhaps it’s time to think of things a little differently, and start supporting and investing our energy in something new. And I don’t mean a convention centre.

Garry Neil Kennedy’s recently published book, The Last Art College: Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, 1968-1978 could not have come at a more appropriate time. As other art institutions face similar fates, let’s not allow a grim conclusion to emerge, like “The Last Art College: Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, 1887-2012.” NSCAD has an incredible history, one that should be respected and celebrated. Let’s celebrate it’s history by continuing to contribute to this city, this province, this country, this planet… in the present, and the future.
