There is a haunting feeling of loneliness in this painting–”Hopperesque.” No wonder it’s a favorite–great work. You get a lot out of a limited palette and I love the subtle shadows.
This reminds me of a pianting that was in a show called “The Night Gallery” from the early 1970′s, . . .there was a seqment involving a man who was expecting a visit from a dead relative, and as the time got closer, . . . the painting would change, a man seemed to appear getting closer to the house in the painting(which was of the same house he was standing in) as the time got closer, . . .the man in the painting got closer to the front door of the house, until he heard a knock on the door and had a heart attack.
Ha ha, I knew you liked Eric! I remember feeling really happy about this when it was finished. I think you’re right about finding my voice, I’m still happy about it.
It was definitely Hopper inspired Jack, you’re right about that! I was going for the feel of “Early Sunday Morning”, one of my favorite Hopper paintings.
You’re very talented. I enjoy checking in on your blog because you always have something interesting. How long until you finish school? Barb aka barbie bud
Hi Barbie! It’s a four-year degree I’ve signed up for, I’m close to being finished my first year, so three more to go. If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to take some summer courses and speed things up, maybe finish early.
what i really enjoy with your paintings are the stories that you just know are there, but you do such a great job of leaving it all to speculation never giving more than what is right in front of you. you’re choice of a limited palette in this painting has definitely made the story ‘appear’…and those two tall shadows coming in the from the left!! i’m almost too scared to peek in those dark windows!!
This is one of my favorites too! As a composition I just love it, it’s so rich and beautiful. I think you really started to find your voice here.
I think the absence of people gives it an erie feel. Very cool painting. I remember seeing it on your web site.

I’m almost waiting for someone to come out.

Thanks Frank! Yeah, it’s on the website, but I couldn’t resist posting it again..

Travis, I’m sincerely creeped out by your story, it’s eerie. I would love to see that painting. Do you remember what it was called??

What I like most about this one is the two mysterious shadows coming from the left. Really nice work!
Hmmm..I think I’ll let those shadows remain a mystery for now.

Thanks Christine! I’m glad the story and mystery is evident in the painting, that’s definitely what I was going for!
I imagine Edward Hopper himself stepping out onto the sidewalk for a smoke.
